A Truly ‘Electric’ Afternoon At Tynecastle!

Yes – despite a 2-0 defeat in our final SPL home match of the season, we were treated to some amazing displays today. Sadly, it wasn’t by anyone wearing a maroon jersey.

The electric bit came from one of the most spectacular lightning storms I’ve witnessed at a football match. Several flashes, including one amazing fork to the south, lit up the darkened sky followed by loud rumblings of thunder, drawing lots of ‘Oooohs’ and ‘Aaaahs’ from a crowd of around 11,000.

As if that wasn’t enough, we were also treated to some notable fly-pasts from the opportunist seagulls, often swooping under the stand roofs to take a look at what the fans were munching, although I did wonder if it was the mince in the pies or the mince on the pitch which had attracted their interest.

There really is little point in giving a report on this match. It was your typical end-of season-nothing-at-stake 90 minutes. Hearts started with five in midfield – Jonsson on the right, Kingston and Cesnauskas supposedly in attacking roles, and Screpis in a defensive midfield role alongside Stewart. Four of those five were indeed total mince, with only Screpis perhaps scraping pass marks by displaying enthusiasm, a decent first touch and some accurate passing.

Scott Wilson announced that George Burley was in the stand – drawing some fine applause from the fans – and we can only wonder what was going through his mind as he watched the club which he energised so wonderfully less than three years ago plumb these depths of ineptitude. It is almost painful to think of how far the playing and coaching side of our club has fallen since those amazing 10 weeks in 2005.

The other ex-Hearts manager in attendance today must be glad that, when he returns tomorrow for Robbie Neilson’s testimonial game, he is charge of the Cup-winning Select and not the current Hearts team.

Having seen Jim Jefferies’ potential for raging at his own players in the past, it’s doubtful if he’d be able to refrain from displaying his anger if he had to take charge of the sorry bunch who (yet again) let the club down today.

C’mon the cup select. I always seem to start wondering why I care.

Indeed, Dalien … that question occured to me too as I left the stadium today. Along with ” Why the hell did I renew my ST ? ”

Don’t even start on that subject again!

The testimonial today reminded all there what it’s like to have affection for players wearing the great maroon. At long last Pressley received the ovation he deserves also.
