Former Hearts favourite and absolute legend, Ryan McGowan, is preparing to take centre stage in the Brazil World Cup. Ex-Jambo defender, nicknamed Gowser, is in the Australian squad who are in the ‘Group of Death’ along with Chile, Spain and The Netherlands.
The Aussies open their World Cup campaign against Chile, who also have an ex-Hearts player in their ranks. Mauricio Pinilla spent a brieft ime at Tynecastle from 2007-08, but now playes for Italians Cagliari.
Jambos around the world will be following the progress of Gowser, in the absense of Scotland once again on the world stage. McGowan became synonymous with the Hearts support for his celbration following his goal in the the 2012 Scottish Cup Final. Above all, though, he will be rememberd fondly for the effort he put in every time he pulled on that maroon jersey.
Recently, Aussie team mate Tim Cahill tweeted that McGowan is the funniest player in the Australian squad.
So, on the evening of 13th June when Gowser pull on that gold and green jersey and puts his 100% into his nation’s World Cup dream, I’m sure Jambos everywhere will be backing him all the way.
