Guarding Against Rising Expectations

Hearts are back in the Scottish Premiership this season of course but we’ve got to beware of ‘rising expectations’ as to just how well we can do back in the topflight.

Last season we walked the Championship, winning this by a country mile, but Director of Football Craig Levein has spoken in the Edinburgh News about what we should expect this season.

Levein is ‘hopeful’ we’ll do well stepping back into the Premiership but feels we’ve got to be mindful plenty of our squad haven’t played at this level before so it could take them time to adjust.

‘We’re coming up against teams that are established – that’s our biggest problem.

‘A lot of players haven’t played in this league before. It takes a while to understand sometimes what the important things are when you go to a new club and a new division.

‘There is an element of needing to see how they settle but, on first sight, I’m hopeful.’

We’ve lost some of our squad from last season, most as a result of moves we made, but we’ve also added Juanma, Blazej Augustyn, Gavin Reilly, and Juwon Oshaniwa should be a formality now.

Adding these to our squad will help all concerned according to Levein and as much as expectation will be high he wants to make sure we’re not setting this too high!

I agree with Levein to a degree, we’ve had some troublesome times at Tynecastle but we are a very big club and should be more than capable of doing well this season. Is there really that much of a difference between our Championship winning ability and most of those at Premiership level?

We’ll find out soon enough but I’m reasonably optimistic about this coming season, without expecting too much of course….

The article got me thinking about how the PL teams fared last season, compared to us. Apart from Celtic and Aberdeen, all the others went through periods when they couldn’t win a game. So its likely that we’ll also suffer these spells too – hopefully Robbie and the experienced players can guide everyone through these sticky spells so that we stay well clear of relegation/playoff worries. We should probably consider 6th or higher as a successful return to the top division.
