Hearts Are The Bad Guys

I see that Hearts were officially the worst behaved team in the SPL last season, managing to finish bottom of the Fair Play Table.

I must admit, this is some achievement by a team whose main problem for most of the season has been being too lightweight! How did we manage it?

I can only assume that most of the bookings have been for innocuous tackles and petulance. We’ve generally been quite easily bullied throughout the season, particularly in the midfield area. This has resulted in some Hearts players becoming frustrated and perhaps lashing out and making stupid tackles. We’ve also had a problem in that most of our midfield players simply cannot tackle! The only man who really could was Julien Brellier, but he hardly played last season.

If anything, Hearts need to become a much harder team for the forthcoming season. If they can do that and end up finishing bottom of this Fair Play table again, then so be it. In fact, I’d quite like us to be seen as a physical team like we were under Craig Levein – teams hated playing against Hearts back then and often this physical reputation would help us psychologically.

So in short, I’m quite happy being at the bottom of the Fair Play league, but not the manner in which we got there. Let’s bring in a couple of bruisers in the middle of the park to make some of these bookings actually count!

For the record, Celtic finished top of the Fair Play league, followed by Aberdeen and Kilmarnock. I found this particularly amusing as they are arguably the three most physical sides in the country, particularly the latter two! Perhaps this says a lot about the refereeing in Scotland………..

Brellier can tackle, but he’s the guy who gets a yellow card in the first 20 minutes. He always gets booked.

He hasn’t always deserved it though. And besides, if the booking involves taking out the most dangerous player in the opposition’s team, then it can be worth it!
