This is a deal Hearts are hopeful of completing in the coming days with the signs positive this is something Robbie Neilson is able to do.

Conor Sammon, also linked with Aberdeen, is a free agent following his release by Derby. The Republic of Ireland does have options to remain in England but Hearts could be close to signing him by all accounts?

Neilson does need to bring in a striker having seen Osman Sow move to China in February with Nigerian loanee Abiola Dauda returning to parent club Vitesse Arnhem following the conclusion of his loan spell.

On his striker search the Hearts boss told the Edinburgh News he’s got targets but we’ll only bring in players that will improve the squad.

‘The striking department is definitely an area we need to strengthen. We have Gavin Reilly and Juanma, with Dauda going back to Vitesse. It`s an area where we need someone in. Myself, John Murray [chief scout] and Craig are all trying to do it. We`re looking through players and we get reports in all the time. It`s important that the players who come in are better than what we have and better than the players who have left. The higher up we go, the harder that can be. We have targets and we will try to get them.’

Sammon is to be shown around the club and the training ground with him then making a decision on his future, revealing if that will be back in Scotland where he enjoyed success with Kilmarnock to get a move to Wigan.

The 29-year-old then moved onto Derby, who have loaned him out to Ipswich, Rotherham and Sheffield United with him released at the end of his Rams contract.

In recent times the Ireland international hasn’t enjoyed much success but with him a strong targetman he could prove a fine addition to the Hearts squad if he does decided he wants to come to Tynecastle.
