As expected Dale Carrick’s Hearts career is over after it was confirmed he was released, soon after this his anticipated move to Kilmarnock was announced.

Explaining his exit on the Official Website Robbie Neilson said.

‘Dale just wants to play football and to get more game-time.

‘He’s at an age where he wants to play every week and we can’t guarantee that, so he’s going to move on and I’m sure he’ll get a club no bother at all.

‘We wish him all the best and thank him for all his efforts at the club.’

Neilson had already spoken openly about the likelihood the striker would have to move away from Tynecastle to enhance his first-team prospects, which is also something that he himself wanted.

An agreement was reached with him this week to terminate his contract by mutual consent so he leaves us having made 54 appearances and scoring eight-goals, the most famous being his goal against bitter rivals Hibernian in 2014.

It wasn’t long after his confirmed exit that his move to Scottish Premiership rivals Kilmarnock was revealed with him signing a three-year contract, I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing him well….apart from games against us!

I’m not sure how to interpret Robbie’s reasoning for letting Keatings and now Carrick go – “he wants to play every week and we can’t guarantee that”. Wouldn’t most managers say that about 80% of their players ? Are we to assume that Robbie reckons he’s not good enough to be one of the top 2 strikers ? You could argue that as long as he keeps bringing in strikers from outwith the academy, then home-grown youngsters will always struggle to make it. Good to see Lockie giving Carrick a chance though – it would be embarrassing for us though if he blossoms into a good Premier League striker at Killie !! I guess we have to trust that Robbie is simply raising the standards at the club, in terms of the quality of players he can bring in within the budget – and if it means that some decent U-20s have to be ditched, then so be it, even if it looks harsh.
