Manager Jim Jefferies admitted today that he is considering bringing in John Robertson to do some coaching sessions with our forwards, which will be very welcome news for many fans. None of our strikers seemed to progress under Csaba Laszlo, and his constant moaning at the lack of “kvalitee” up front was starting to wear thin. It was obvious to most fans that specialist coaching – even on an irregular basis -would be a benefit to young guys desperate to improve.

‘John did a couple of sessions for me at Kilmarnock and he is very good with the strikers,’ said the manager.

‘We have talked about it, we want to get him along for a session or two to work with them. If you want someone to teach your strikers in and around the penalty box, especially the younger players, then there is no-one who knows his way around the box better than John. To finish, you have to be aware of where you are or where to go and John did that with great success.

‘The fact he stays in Inverness is always a problem but when he is doing his television work, he stays overnight and maybe he can come in and do a couple of sessions with us. I am sure he would look forward to that.’

Craig Levein and JJ both employed Robbo on a casual basis at Dundee United and Kilmarnock to sharpen up the skills of their forwards, so I`m very pleased that JJ wants to do the same at Tynecastle. Youngsters like Gordon Smith, Scott Robinson, David Templeton and Arvydas Novikovas would surely benefit the most from expert coaching from a guy with his scoring record. Let`s hope that a certain Russian doesn`t pour cold water on the idea !!

I’d say that this type of appointment is a must and even more so if Robbo is the man for the job. Let’s just hope that the logistics of where he lives doens’t prove too much of a barier – though I suppose even if was just once a week it would be better than nothing.

Once a week might be wishful thinking there … but I know what you mean. Just noticed that I forgot to mention Gary Glen in the list of youngsters who could benefit. Any thoughts on whether he could turn David Witteveen into a 20-goal-a-season striker ?

Please!! Please!! We have nothing to lose. I did suggest some time ago that this appointment would be great – now that JJ is saying it too means that he must have something that can benefit our young forwards. It’s too late for any benefit this season but some work between now and the start of next season couldn’t do any harm.

I’ve nothing against David Witteveen personally but I just think he doesn’t actually have the talent for SPL level football (a damning indictment if ever there was one!). However, no matter how talently challenged he is, some intensive and directed coaching wouldn’t do any harm.
