Lothar Matthaus’ agent John Inglis has confirmed that the former German World Cup hero would again be interested in the Hearts manager’s job should he be approached by Vladimir Romanov about the position.

Matthaus left FC Salzburg earlier in the week and clearly wants to get back into football quickly. Before the bizarre appointment of Graham Rix around 18 months ago, Matthaus had voiced his interest in the Hearts job and it would appear that once again, he would be keen to speak to Romanov is the opportunity came his way.

Inglis had this to say of Matthaus’ position:

‘I can openly state, on behalf of Lothar, that he would be interested in talking to the people at Hearts. We have gone down this road before but, at that time, we did not get any feedback from Hearts. That said, he would definitely be interested in speaking to them. Despite just recently leaving Salzburg he already has a couple of offers on the table, but there is no doubt he would be interested in Hearts.’

I’m not sure about anyone else, but even despite the guy’s average record as a manager so far, the prospect of Lothar Matthaus at Hearts excites me a hell of a lot more than any of the other names I’ve seen linked with the job recently. He would by no means be a guaranteed success at Tynecastle, but what a lift the place would get if a man of his profile were to get the job.

Or are we forgetting that we’ve been promised this sort of high profile appointment before by Romanov and seriously let down e.g. the appointments of Rix and Ivanauskas. Let’s just wait and see what happens….

Lothar has openly stated on behalf of Lothar that he’s not interested in the Hearts job at the moment. In fact, he wants a long holiday instead. So that would appear to be that.

That’s not the way I read his comments, unless of course you class a “few weeks” as a long time! Don’t think it’ll happen anyway though.

Well, given that he’s apparently ruled himself out of the running and hasn’t even applied for the post, I fully expect him to be unveiled at a press conference at Riccarton on Monday! 😉
