Hearts have announced that next month’s glamour friendly against Catalan giants Barcelona has already seen more than 20,000 applications for tickets.

The match will be held at Murrayfield on July 28 and the fact that there is still a considerable amount of time to go before then shows just how much interest has been generated.

I know lots of non-Hearts supporting people who will be going along purely to see some of the Barcelona players live for the first time. In fact to be honest, I rarely attend pre-season friendlies these days as they are normally very low-key and a bit of a rip-off to be honest, but it’s different when you’re going to be watching some genuine quality isn’t it? I saw these guys live recently at the Nou Camp and they really are the business, even if their defence and goalkeeper are a bit dodgy! Even if the likes of Eto’o, Deco and Ronaldinho only play for half an hour or so, I reckon that people will get their money’s worth.

The question is, just how many people can this match hope to realistically attract in total? It’s been suggested that if sales continue as they have been, then we could be looking at something in the region of 40,000, perhaps even 50,000 at a push. That would be fantastic for any Hearts game, let alone a pre-season friendly!

We’ll see how it pans out, but I’d imagine that we’ll be looking at a bigger crowd than the one we got at Murrayfield last season for the visit of AEK Athens, with attracted just under 33,000. Should be a great occasion.

Should be a great occasion. Then they’ll ruin it by kicking off. Henry will score within ten minutes.

Who cares? Does anyone really think it’ll be anything other than a cricket score? And does it matter?

Yeah but there’ll be so many substitutions that it’s difficult to see much flow to the game, so it might not be the cricket score you expect. Still should be a good day.
