According to local reports, Rangers are interested in signing Hearts’ Lee Wallace in the summer.

Like most of the first team squad at Tynecastle, Wallace is a player who has suffered at the hands of our bizarre management set-up over the past few years, and as such his development has not
progressed as everyone would have liked. I think the guy is a talented player, but because he’s never really been given a run in the team in a regular position, whether it be left back or in midfield, he has never really been able to build upon the solid start that he made to his Hearts career.

Personally I think that Wallace has more chance of making it as a wide midfield player rather than a left back, which is a position where he has struggled at times in the past. He seems to be a far more attack-minded player than a defensive one, and I think it’s this willingness to get forward that can tend to leave him out of position at the back when he’s deployed there. But that’s just a personal view based on the evidence I’ve seen of Wallace – proper coaching could well bring out the best in him as a defender.

I don’t think it’s a huge surprise that the likes of Rangers could be interested in this player. He is after all still only 20 years of age, and given that Rangers’ policy recently has been to try and secure some decent Scottish talent (although it’s debatable if they’ve actually managed to sign anyone in that category!), then he is certainly the sort of player who could develop nicely if given the appropriate direction and encouragement. And given the managerial structure currently at boths clubs, I don’t think there’s much doubt about which one would give him the best opportunity to do that!

Wallace is contracted to Hearts until 2011, so you’d have think that any deal would obviously have to involve a considerable amount of money changing hands here. Will Hearts be keen to let Wallace go to an SPL rival? Well, I suppose much of that will depend upon who will be in the Tynecastle dug-out in the coming months…….
