£3.75m for Hearts’ Velicka

Hearts (or more accurately, FBK Kaunas) have reportedly put a £3.75 million price tag on top scorer Andrius Velicka.

The Lithuanian, who is on loan at Tynecastle from Kaunas, has now scored 12 goals from only 14 starts this season, and this is in spite of being asked to play on his own in attack on numerous occasions. It’s a creditable achievement and has not gone unnoticed, with several clubs rumoured to be interested in his services, most notably English Premiership side Bolton.

It had previously been reported that a fee of around £1.5 million could be enough to shift Velicka, but according to reports this morning that figure has risen to £3.75 million, no doubt in an attempt to scare
off any potential buyers.

As mentioned already on this site, I’d like to see Hearts retaining Velicka’s services for now to see exactly how effective he can become. I’m not convinced that he’s worth the sort of money being talked about here, but goals count for a lot in today’s game and generally those who are capable of scoring them do go for big money, regardless of their overall football ability sometimes. By that I don’t mean that Velicka is a poor footballer, but sometimes his overall contribution to a match can be lacking, although that is perhaps a side-effect of being asked to play on his own, which is for me not something that he enjoys. I’d like to see how he would do with a regular striker partner alongside him – my guess would be that this is when we would see the best of the guy.

But if someone comes in with £3.75 million or more…………..

Very pleased indeed that we have hopefully priced him out of the market in the meantime. I too would like to see what this player could achieve under a proper manager (not Frail) and given a run of games with a decent strike partner and sensible tactics.

There’s just something about Velicka that I’m not aure about. I can’t argue with the goals he’s scored and perhaps the goings on haven’t helped but I’m not entirely convinced about him. Having said that, I think that we should try to retain him for the rest of the season and allow him to form a partnership wih another striker. But there’s the question ………. who exaclty? Nade – no! Elliot – no! Give Makela a shot (why on earth pay £300k and not give him a chance?!) or even Beniusis.

imagine him and bednar up front, what a combo

That would be good. Even if he own Bednar’s contract I can hardly see him coming back up here …… more’s the pity. A cheeky bid for Scott MacDonald perhaps ……………………….!!

    Or McCormack from Motherwell?
