Are Hearts Letting Their Best ‘Keeper Go?

Today’s newspaper reports are suggesting that Hearts goalkeeper Marian Kello is set to be released by the club along with Polish midfielder Adrian Mrowiec, as the summer transfer merry-go-round starts in earnest.

The club have already confirmed they’ll be parting company with captain Robbie Neilson and Cyprus-bound Christos Karipidis, with Bruno Aguiar also looking likely to be on his way.

The news that Mrowiec is likely to be freed doesn’t really surprise me as I’ve seen nothing from him to suggest that he’s anything better than average, but for me Kello was definitely a player worth holding on to. Out of three goalkeepers who have played for the first team this season, Kello is probably the one who has impressed me the most for his all-round solid game. He is perhaps not the tallest but he is still able to command his six-yard area reasonably well, and for some reason I always just feel a tad more comfortable with him between the sticks than when Janos Balogh is there, even though the Hungarian has had a decent season for Hearts.

Jamie MacDonald is still not a guy we’ve seen enough of to make any final judgements upon. and he is also tied up on a longer-term deal so it makes sense for him to remain at the club. But as for the other two, well, they have both staked decent claims to be the number one at times this season, so it’s a difficult shout for the club.

Obviously the club are attempting to cut costs where they can though and perhaps three goalkeepers in the first team represents one more than they feel is entirely necessary, so that means either Balogh or Kello moving on. At the moment it looks as though Kello will be that man, but are the club making a mistake? Time may tell….

The young boy Ridgers is getting rave reviews as well though, so I suspect he will be promoted to the first team squad next season in place of Kello (who is a safe enough pair of hands even if his kicking is woeful). I can see Balogh being first choice next year (he is Csaba’s signing after all) with MacDonald and Ridgers chomping at the bit.

I know what you mean, Mr H – Kello has looked good these last few weeks, much better than he did at the start of the season. Balogh’s blunder against Celtic didn’t do him any favours, and it would appear that Csaba has decided that McDonald needs more coaching before he is ready to become the regular number one. As you say SJ, Mark Ridgers does seem to be thought of highly – as does the next generation keeper (Shaun Thomson)

agreed about kello who’s looked great recently, but hes still not the best keeper at the club – thats Steve Banks
