Argentinians Not Going To Hearts?

After initially appearing to be a done deal that Argentinian trialists Damian Gimenez and Fernando Screpis would sign for Hearts, it would appear that neither player will be heading to Tynecastle. Well, not in the near future anyway.

Both players had featured in Hearts’ tour of Austria and were expected to sign permanent deals this week, but according to the Evening News today, they failed to agree contract terms with the club.

However, in Screpis’ case it would appear that he could still earn a move to FBK Kaunas, with the possibility existing that he could still end up at Tynecastle if he impresses in the Lithuanian league. This does seem a tad convoluted, but the message I’m taking from this story is that it sounds like Hearts are not convinced enough about either player to offer them particularly good contracts, and with Screpis it could be a case of the jury still being out on him, so let’s see how he does at Kaunas for six months.

I could be wrong though. Perhaps it is now the case that Kaunas and not Hearts are now at the ‘top’ of Vladimir Romanov’s pyramid of football clubs. Remember, they are the team in the Champions League qualifiers this season, so there is every possibility that Romanov would prefer them to be as strong as possible, at least in the early part of the season while they still have a chance of getting into the money-spinning Champions League group stages. And let’s face it, they surely have every chance of getting there, considering that their ultimate opponents before that stage will be Rangers!

Disappointed about this, as Screpis did look like a player. Don’t know about Giminez, he didn’t feature at all in Austria. However, if we sign that Ruben bloke I’ll be happy, as he looks to be the direct replacement for our biggest loss in the close season & the one that could potentially hurt us the most in the SPL season – Monsieur Brellier. You raise a good point about the pyramid too…

It’s a point that I believe you brought up yourself SJ and one that is looking more and more pertinent. I do agree also that the sound of an Argentinian playing for us is a bit strange! We’ve never had one have we?

Not that I know of. As someone pointed out before though, not every Argentinian is Maradona just like not every Brazilian is Scheidt. It may be best if there’s any doubt about either of them to spend 6 months at Kaunas to see how they do. We all know what happened at Dundee. I gather we are trialling a couple of other South Americans on the German tour, so lets see what happens. As to the pyramid, it’s something thats concerned me for a good while… but unless we don’t get Mendy or Hleb I wouldn’t be pushing the panic button just yet.

It really doesn’t matter where they come from does it? We have this idea that all Brazilians and Argentinians are great footballers, but we only really see the very best they have to offer on tv – there’ll be some scheidt over there as well!

It doesn’t matter where they come from no, but I’ll put good money on the notion that an average Brazilian or Argentinian is better than the best Lithuania has to offer. Currently Miko is one of Lithuania’s best…
