August now a huge month for Hearts

If you could plot the emotional life of a Hearts supporter, it would look something like the FTSE 100 index graph in the last few weeks – up and down from day to day ?. usually more down than up. The upward optimism from the summer signings and draws at Ibrox and in Hungary were countered by a poor performance against Dundee Utd and the sacking of JJ, then a rise again due to the win over Paksi at Tynecastle, followed by another slump with the 1-0 defeat at Motherwell.

The fixtures for the rest of this month are certainly intriguing – 3 SPL games which could generate 9 points or no points, depending on what kind of performance Hearts come up with. Add in the 2 Europa ties against Spurs, and this is certainly a mouth-watering month for the fans.

Sat 13th – Aberdeen (h)
Thur 18th – Tottenham Hotspur (h)
Sun 21st – Kilmarnock (a)
Thur 25th – Tottenham Hotspur (a)
Sun 28th – Hibernian (h)

There can surely be few fans who seriously expect Hearts to win either of the Spurs matches – yet we can perhaps dare to hope that the tie is still “alive” after the first leg. For me, the 2 must-win games are the Aberdeen and Hibs matches at Tynecastle. 3 points from each of those would go a long way to building confidence among the fans and players that this season can still see us challenge for 3rd place (as a minimum). Building a strong home record must be a priority. Since Vladimir sacked JJ after 13 games without a win, we can expect him to be equally as severe on Paulo Sergio – so for his sake, I hope the team doesn`t go into September with no wins out of the 4 SPL matches he will have been in charge of.

What are your thoughts on the August outlook for Hearts ?

We should be beating Aberdeen, Kilmarnock and Hibs. We should be losing rather heavily, I?m afraid, to Spurs. But ….this is Hearts we are talking about ?so anything could happen. The team and PS need some points on the board pronto ? the longer we go without a win the more pressure will be brought to bear by the press, fans and of course VR. I want (don?t we all) 9 SPL points and a respectable showing against Spurs but I suspect it will be a rather rockier road than that. This European style passing game that PS is there to instil isn?t going to happen quickly ? I?m not even sure that we have the players to pull it off (or if the SPL is the place for it to be honest). Whatever happens let?s hope PS gets a decent run ? I sense that VR has a rather itchy trigger finger at the moment and if by say Christmas we are not firing on all cylinders and our league position is not top 3 then it could be all change again.
