Does McGhee Know Something We Don’t?

Talk 107 have some quotes attributed to Mark McGhee on their website which make for interesting reading.

The Motherwell manager recently turned down the chance of a move to Tynecastle at the 11th hour a couple of weeks ago, leaving Hearts in a seemingly desperate position of trying to find themselves a suitable alternative.

However since deciding that it was not the correct time for his to be leaving Motherwell, a decision that we should all respect, McGhee has had some interestingly complimentary things to say about Hearts and their owner Mr Romanov, and once again today he appears to be reading from the same page.

Speaking about his side’s opening day clash with Hearts at Tynecastle in the coming season, McGhee said:

‘By then Hearts will have a new manager and they will be looking forward to the new season.

‘Last season we had a run of games that looked as if it gave us a chance, against the less fancied teams if you like. This season it`s the reverse, it’s a really difficult start.

‘At the moment I’m looking at the Hearts game, they beat us at home twice last season, so it`s a really hard game to start with.

‘One thing I did do when I considered the Hearts job was have a right good look at Hearts. They have a really strong squad and they will strengthen this summer.

‘I said it a few weeks ago, if we finish above Hearts next season then we will finish third.’

He seems very confident about that doesn’t he? I wonder just how much information regarding Romanov’s signing plans that he was privy to prior to turning down the move to Tynie? You’d have to think that had they sounded exciting then he’d have signed on the dotted line, but perhaps McGhee’s motives were indeed honourable and he stayed at Motherwell out of loyalty to John Boyle. Who knows.

I still think that the number of quotes from McGhee saying positive things about Hearts is a little bit peculiar if he never intends to end up in the Tynecastle manager’s office, but then maybe I’m being as bad as the Scottish press when it comes to adding up numbers and suggesting the wrong answer!

Maybe he has a deal to push up our season ticket sales?

I wouldn,t read to much into these quotes ,, he is merely stating his opinion of what he imagines will transpire at Tynecastle prior to the opening game and under normal circumstances when speaking of a club of Hearts stature he ,, and we ,, would be right to make this assumption ,, but this is Hearts under the bamboozling control of a family that are far from normal ,, abnormal would be a more apt description ,, I would imagine McGhee is being graceful and extending Hearts every courtesy ,, whether there is any substance to his comments is minimal ,, hope you get someone in shortly though ,, time stands still for nobody ,, not even the Romanov’s ……

Yeah, I agree with Wishaw Bhoy – nothing much in it. Perhaps he just wants to make a few nice comments to help smoothe the waters – still feeling a bit guilty about his change of heart. “A right strong squad” … hmm… we can only wonder if he’d have thought that if he’d taken the job. With MM as boss, we’d all have been disappointed if he’d said “I’m not signing anyone because quite frankly I don’t need anyone new because I’ve got a right strong squad here”.

  • StockportJambo says:

Can’t know until the squad has been assessed by a real football manager. Maybe MM would have been happy with the majority of players at Hearts… who knows? I do know he would have got a hell of a lot more out of them than the muppets in charge at the moment.

I wonder if he really does mean the comment about us having a strong squad though – I suspect not and he’s just doing what most managers do by talking up his own team’s opposition…..probably in case they lose!

  • Specs Haver says:

You’re probably both right, Mr H and SJ. Oh well, another day without a manager looms. Various rumours doing the rounds – Weiss has turned us down ….. we’ve told Gudjun he’s a Badjun and isn’t getting the job….Ogilvie thinking of quitting…. Bin Laden is alive and living on benefits in Pumpherston ….. petrol to hit £2 a litre this year. I’m not sure which ones to believe anymore.

  • StockportJambo says:

£2 a litre looks a dead cert. The rest I’d take with a pinch of salt.

  • wishaw bhoy says:

hey ,, you should come to stay in Wishaw ,, bin laden on your doorstep and the price of petrol would be the least of your problems the SAS would have trouble cutting it here ,, the banner headline in the local paper this week read “”Outrage at the latest hike in the price of Buckfast “” ………..
