Driver Wants To Stay At Hearts

Andy Driver has once again stated that he has no intention of leaving Hearts in the January transfer window.

Driver, who again proved his worth to the team during yesterday’s 2-0 win over Hibs at Easter Road, albeit in sporadic bursts, has long maintained that at this stage in his career he is happy to remain
at Hearts, who are a club that can help him to develop into the player that he’d eventually like to become before thinking about future options.

He said:

‘I won’t be going seeking a transfer. I’ve got a long contract with Hearts and I’m happy in Edinburgh. I won’t be rushing away.

‘I’m just happy winning games in a team that looks like it’s going forward. Until I get told ‘you have to move on’ I don’t want to leave. I’m happy to be here and happy playing with the squad of players we have and the manager we have. Everything is going brilliantly at the moment.

‘There was an offer before (from Burnley] and I didn’t go seeking a transfer then. I just said I was happy here. It didn’t get to the stage where I got involved. Everyone always asks me about teams watching me but I’ve never paid attention to it.’

Ah but didn’t you know that you’re meant to be part of a January ‘firesale’ at Tynecastle, Andy? Or have you decided to stop reading the Daily Ranger?! Good choice, sir……..

The much vaunted “firesale” appears to be happening approx 50 miles west of here – much to the Press’ disappointment no doubt! January is a very long month but Driver speaks a lot of sense. It clearly is in his best footballing interests to stay put for the moment, gather a barrowload of first team experience (including Eurpoean action perhaps!) and then hopefully move to a better team than Burnley (with all due respect of course). I would include Berra in this scenario too.

Driver simply isn’t the finished article yet – and he has a lot more to learn before he can get his big move. He has a far better chance of doing that with (as you say) the chance of European football with Hearts than languish in the anonymity of the English Championship. His final ball isn’t good enough (yet), and his right leg is only for standing on most of the time. If he can improve these two aspects of his game, he will become something very special indeed. Figure another couple of years at Hearts and then away.

Well done, young Andrew !! Totally agree with your comments, guys. Hopefully he is enjoying working for a charismatic manager like Csaba. A special mention should be made of the perfect cut-back for Nade’s goal yesterday (I heard him say it was meant to be a shot, but surely he was just joking !!). The fact that you don’t often see a winger play a short cutback like that from a moving ball suggests thats it takes a fair bit of vision and skill to do – so, once again, well done Andrew !!

He definitely isn’t the finished article, SJ, and for me would be lost in the EPL. His best move is most definitely to stay where he is at least for another season beyond this one, but if someone does flash a big cheque book in his face, will he have to savvy to make a career decision rather than one purely based on money? Difficult.

He’s 21 now… 23 I think would be a good time to move to a bigger league. By then, if he keeps developing, he should be a far more accomplished player – still young enough to make him attractive to managers looking to build a team for the long term, but old enough to know the game and his place in it. He would also still have a couple of years left on his contract, so we should get decent money for him. Selling him now would be premature, because a) money is tight everywhere and b) the chequebook would therefore be much bigger in two years time. I get the impression that Andrew is level-headed enough to realise this… hence the timing of this statement.
