Eddie Thompson RIP

Sad news to hear that Dundee United owner Eddie Thompson passed away this morning, especially on the back of the tragic death of his son-in-law just last week.

As ever at a time like this our thoughts go out to Eddie’s family and close friends – a horrendous time that nothing but time is likely to help heal.

I don’t know a great deal about Eddie Thompson but from what I can gather it seems as though he was a real died-in-the-wool Dundee United fan, and one who really put his money where his mouth was due to his genuine love of that club.

There aren’t many people of his type around in Scottish football sadly – how much better would our game be if every club in the SPL was owned by a passionate Scottish owner with a bit of cash like Thompson had? Considerably I would say.

Condolences also to everyone connected with Dundee United – I hope they can bounce back and give their former owner a team that he’d have been proud of. RIP Eddie.

I wasn’t even aware he was Ill so this news actually comes as a bit of shock to me. To battle through that illness for so long is a great testament to the man. I remember him standing by Craig Levine last season at Ibrox for an interview about McCurry; both were brilliant, he gave no indications that he was a man who was suffering.

As I mentioned before, I feel for his daughter more than most in all of this (by that I mean no disrespect to any others), she just lost her husband a couple of days previously to a road accident, which she actually witnessed. To lose your Father and your husband in such a ridiculously short period of time would push any person?s emotional needs to the limit.

God be with her especially. RIP Eddie and RIP Ken.

Indeed – truly horrendous. On a lighter note though you’re right – Levein and Thompson’s interview at Ibrox was classic!

Definitely one of the good guys, and will be sadly missed. I never met Eddie, but I did meet his son once at a charity do in Lochee. Top bloke. RK, you’re right, I can’t even begin to imagine what Justine (his daughter) will be going through. Heartfelt condolences to all his family and friends, and especially Justine. RIP Eddie.

I didn’t know his son-in-law had died a few days previously – how unimaginably awful for his daughter. Eddie seemed a bit like our Wallace Mercer – a fairly wealthy guy who got into football as a hobby and challenge – and then found to his horror how much time and money (and stress) it cost just to stand still. He certainly made his mark at United – and latterly enjoyed a few highs under Craig Levein.
