Hearts winger Andy Driver has been called into the England Under-21 squad for this summer’s European Championship in Sweden.

There has been some debate lately about which country Driver would end up turning out for, as contrary to initial assumptions he is in fact eligible for play for either Scotland or England, but this news looks pretty certain to confirm his nationality as being English as far as football is concerned anyway.

England U21 coach Stuart Pearce has had Driver watched on several occasions over the past season or so, during which he has been one of Hearts’ better players. I do seem to remember some of the Hearts games that Pearce witnessed being among the worst performances of Driver’s season, but clearly he has also had him watched at times when he has excelled, and this is great reward after a season of progress for the winger.

Pearce had this to say of Driver’s inclusion in his squad:

“We have a couple of new faces in the squad this time around. Andrew has benefited from Aaron Lennon’s injury in a way and has come off a good season with Hearts up in Scotland. He will provide us with natural width which is something we needed in the squad alongside the likes of Adam Johnson and James Milner.’

Good luck to Andy when he turns out for England this summer. It’s always nice to have another player given international recognition, and this will also be beneficial as far as his potential transfer value is concerned too…..!

Well done that man. He doesn’t seem to want to leave just now either so maybe a little longer at the club and the old valuation will rise.

Also nice to note that the entire championship is on Sky so we can watch oor Andy in action if he gets his game.

Technically I think he’s eligible for Scotland (and might have represented at some level – not sure) but I think there’s some sort of “gentleman’s agreement” whereby the home nations don’t somehow poach other players. Mind you, this doesn’t make sense when you consider the number of English folk who have turned out for Scotland ….. I could be talking mince! Anyway, best of luck to him and I might even watch some of the games.
