The position of striker at Tynecastle would appear to have been rather jinxed over the past season or two, and that seems to be continuing today with the news that Calum Elliot, who was only on the pitch for a few minutes of yesterday’s match against Rangers after coming on as a substitute, has suspected cartilage damage in his right knee.

Elliot came on in the second half as Hearts looked to wrap up the points against ten-man Rangers, but after he went down in what looked like a run-of-the-mill, innocuous challenge, he never got back up again, and in the end had to be substituted himself.

Of the injury Csaba Laszlo told the club’s website:

‘We will have him (Elliot) assessed today and only then will we know the full extent of the injury.

‘At this stage we must not talk about how long he will be out because we cannot know until we understand the injury fully.’

I’m no medical expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I do know from personal experience that cartilage injuries can be particularly difficult to recover from when the extent of the damage exceeds a certain level. Fingers crossed for Calum that it’s not as bad as first feared and he can make a quick recovery, as Hearts need all the help they can get in attack right now!
