Hearts Interested In Braga Striker

Hearts are reportedly interested in signing Sporting Braga striker Albert Meyong-Ze before the end of the January transfer window.

The player has scored six goals in 14 games in the Portuguese league so far this season, and has also scored an impressive five in the UEFA Cup. He is 28 years of age.

I can’t pretend that I know anything more than the above about this guy, but his name definitely rings a bell as someone we were interested in signing back in the summer. Reports are suggesting that Csaba has only been tracking him for three months or so, but I could have sworn his name was mentioned further back than that…..not that it matters a jot I suppose!

We’ll see what happens here – there are bound to be several nonsense reports at this time of the year and this could well be one of those. At the moment it looks more likely that Hearts will be pursuing their interest in Motherwell’s Chris Porter, who turned down a move to Huddersfield on Friday, but even then it’s difficult to say whether or not they’ll have any success on that front.

We’ll keep our fingers crossed for some decent new signings, but in the meantime just be content that this article will have brought back a couple of nice memories of Braga….!

I think this guy was linked with Hearts back in 2006…we got Pinilla instead!!!

His write-up in Wikipedia looks promising – Cameroon striker who has been around a few Portugese clubs scoring a decent number of goals at each. I think Csaba was reported a couple of days ago as having mentioned Portugal as a country where he is interested in a striker. So long as its Csaba’s choice, we can have confidence.

Not sure how you can say that SH. As good as Csaba is – at man management, talking to the media, motivating and training players etc, his ability to spot players who will do a job in the SPL is still very much open to question. The two players he has so far identified are David Obua and Mike Tullberg. Obua has yet to show much of anything substantial after six months of being at Hearts, and as for Tullberg… well…! I don’t recall this name being mentioned before, but we were linked with so many players back in 2006 (and bought a whole team that January don’t forget) it’s not surprising. Who cares who identifies him. As long as he does the business for Hearts, that’s good enough for me.

SJ – I take the point about Csaba’s chosen signings not having shone yet … but not entirely his fault, surely ? We simply don’t know if Tullberg is any good or not. Obua looks to be improving a bit, and Balogh has looked good. But more importantly, I think its is ESSENTIAL that Csaba gets the final say on any non-Kaunas players – otherwise we’re back to the puppet days, which resulted in the event you mention (the 11 players arriving in January 2006), and the Pinilla/Costa disasters !!

So long as Csaba is picking the team – you are of course 100% correct SH. There is no point in players being at Hearts who aren’t going to get a game, so if Csaba is picking the team, he should pick the players brought in. We’ve thrown enough good money after bad over the past three seasons that we’re hardly in a position to keep doing that in the current financial climate (however badly or otherwise Hearts are affected by it, *everyone* is feeling the pinch at the moment). As far as Tullberg goes – you say this Cameroon striker’s stats look good on wikipedia. Have you looked up Tullberg’s? They don’t make such pleasant reading. I was ready to hope, as Csaba was at the time, that he had something to prove, and was going to re-launch his career at Hearts. Instead, he goes AWOL… to the point where Csaba comes out and berates him to the media. He clearly cannot be worth the special treatment afford to the likes of Pinilla (who did, despite it all, have some class on a football field). I take your point about Balogh, but AFAIK from midnight tonight (Sunday) he is no longer a Hearts player – so what does all that tell you?

  • StockportJambo says:

Balogh stays… two more Lithuanians on their way. Hmm.

I agree that the jury is still out on Csaba’s abilities in the transfer market, but I’d much rather have his signings than any of his boss’!

    Indeed so, Mr H !!
