Hearts Linked With Alan Gow

Hearts are once again being linked with a move for Rangers’ out-of-favour striker Alan Gow.

The former Falkirk man made his ill-advised move to Ibrox just over a year ago and has hardly had any opportunities to impress there, meaning that he has been yet another talented Scottish player effectively lost to the game during that time. It’s therefore little surprise that other clubs are being linked with his services – he most surely has to move elsewhere soon to get a game and rescue his career.

The interesting thing for me here though, is where the story linking the player with Hearts is coming from, as Hearts still don’t have a manager. Is he merely one of Stevie Frail’s recommendations? Or do we in fact have a new man working ‘incognito’, to use a favourite word of Roman Romanov’s? Or is it just paper talk to fill a few pages? I’d tend to think it’s probably the latter.

Whatever the truth is, Gow has always looked a decent enough player and a couple of years ago while he was still at Falkirk, I’d probably have been quite happy about him signing for Hearts. But you do have to wonder why he can’t get into that Rangers team – they’re having an exceptionally good season but I’d still say they’re doing that with a distinctly average squad, and if Gow isn’t even getting a sniff of first team action there, then I’d suggest that he possibly isn’t good enough for Hearts either.

The other clubs allegedly showing an interest in Gow are Aberdeen and Dundee United.

I suspect the reason he isn’t getting a game at Ibrox is his style of play. The Rangers style under Walter Smith this season seems to be centred around a strong defence – and that includes defending from the front. It was noticeable in all their televised Euro games just how much running their entire team does to hassle the opposition when they have the ball and try to close down space. Perhaps Gow is a bit of a ‘Kris Boyd’ in that respect – not doing enough work to merit a 90 minute run. Mind you if his scoring rate at Hearts was even half that of Boyd’s (per minute played), we’d all be pretty happy, I think !!

    I’d agree with that Haver.

Yeah, but I think Gow would suit Hearts more than the likes of Boyd. Any time I saw him he looked a football player who plays fairly deep rather than an out-and-out poacher. Someone like Boyd wouldn’t get the service at Hearts that he needs.

Yes – if we’re now being allowed to choose which non-regular Rangers player we’d pick, I’d go along with Gow.
