Today’s draw for the third round of the Scottish Cup has dramatically paired the names of Hibs and Hearts together for a match due to be played at Easter Road on either the 10th or 11th of January.

The match will come just a week after the ‘New Year’ (or as close to it as we sadly get these days) derby at Tynecastle and is likely to be one of the most hotly-anticipated fixtures of the
season so far, especially if we can expect a match anything like as exciting as the recent 1-1 draw between the sides at Easter Road.

The last time that the two teams met on Scottish Cup duty was of course at Hampden for the semi-final of the 2006 tournament ,the day that Paul Hartley scored a famous hat-trick on Hearts’ way to a 4-0 hammering of their oldest rivals. Hearts fans will also have happy memories of the last time that the sides played each other in this tournament at Easter Road, when Wayne Foster scored a dramatic late winner in 1994 to stretch our run of unbeaten derby matches to 21.

Hell of a draw – you talk about ‘make or break’ weeks in a season – how about the week between January 3 and 10?!

Pity there’s no fence round the ER pitch now – it would have been great to see Christian Nade clinging on to it after scoring the winner, in a sort of Fosterish iconic way !! Cue a chance for a “Memories of great Cup wins against Hibs” article, Mr H !!

I expect a few rousing choruses of Super Wayne during that game. Super Waynie Foster, Postman extraordonaire.

Err….well I’d be happy to oblige on that SH but I’ve only been to two! Will have a think about something on a similar theme though. As for a ticket WB, I think we’ll be struggling let alone yourself….!
