Hearts Reject £8M Bid For Gordon?

Hearts have reportedly rejected a bid for Craig Gordon that was in the region of £8 million.

According to Talk 107, Sunderland, who have already had a previous bid for Scotland’s number one rejected, came back with an offer of £5million plus a further £3million in ‘add-ons’ (probably after certain number of games played, etc). However Hearts owner Vladimir Romanov has apparently once again rejected the Premiership side’s advances.

I have to say, if it is true that Sunderland were prepared to offer this amount of money for Gordon, I am very surprised that Romanov rejected it. It is possible that it was the nature of the deal (intricacies, clauses, etc) that put him off rather than the sums of money being talked about, but even still, this is a huge offer for a club like Hearts to throw out no matter what.

A few months ago, before some of the silly transfer fees we’ve seen being paid since the end of last season by English clubs, I’m quite sure that a bid of £5million WITHOUT any add-ons would have been looked upon as a hell of an offer, but even taking into account what’s been happening down there recently, £8million for Gordon has to be very tempting.

As I said, I’d be very interested to know, assuming that this story is true, what the reasons were for turning the offer down. Was the deal overly complicated with various conditions there that would allow Sunderland to get out of paying some of the cash? Or is it the case that Romanov believes that Gordon is actually worth more than £8million and if he really does have to sell him, he’d prefer to hold out for more money? It would be good to know, but then this is Hearts we’re talking about – we never hear anything from the owners these days!

It’ll be interesting to see what happens next, if anything. Surely if someone comes in with an offer of more than this, the club will accept?

It’s a bizarre one. Perhaps CG said to Vlad he didn’t want to go there, and so he rejected the deal on that basis. Either way, it’s an astonishing amount of money to turn down (it would have made CG the most expensive British goalkeeper in history). Another possibility is that there is a larger bid on the table from another club that we don’t know about.

Has to be something like that. I don’t personally think we should be turning down anything over £4million. Double that is funny money for an SPL player.
