Having already signed Nerijus Barasa, Lee Johnson and Neil McCann in the past week, Hearts are also closing in on Portuguese midfielder Bruno Aguiar from Benfica. The 24 year-old is set to sign a 2-and-a-half year contract, but this is still subject to some small details being sorted out and after the apparent collapse of the Mirsad Beslija deal yesterday, we certainly shouldn’t be counting our chickens on this one too quickly!

On the subject of the Beslija deal, Racing Genk are reportedly furious about the situation (a deal of around £800,000 had apparently been agreed by all parties) and could potentially take legal action. Their Sports Director Ariel Jacobs was quoted as saying:

‘We have a contract with a signature on it, but now all of a sudden Hearts don’t want to pay it. We are considering what action we will take next. We have all the evidence we need – this is the transfer market not a cattle market.’

Latest reports have indicated that the Beslija deal is not completely dead, however.

Hearts have also taken another couple of players on trial this week. FC Thun’s Jose Goncalves, a 20 year-old who can play left-back or centre-back and 19 year-old Marseille goalkeeper Rais M’Bolhi are both currently training at Riccarton with the first team squad. I must admit it does seem strange considering the signing of another left-back, especially if the reported fee of £750,000 is anything close to the truth. In Fyssas we have quality in that position and have able deputies in Lee Wallace and Jamie McAllister. Still, we’ll have to see what happens there – if the guy turns out to be the next Roberto Carlos we might just be able to forgive Romanov!

Speaking of Jamie McAllister, he signed a new 2 year contract today despite interest from Dunfermline, Dundee United, Watford and Stoke. He is now contracted to Hearts until the summer of 2008.
