Lee McCulloch Has ‘Retired’ Has He?

Who is Lee McCulloch trying to kid with his ‘the nation must hate me’ comments, following his decision not to play for Scotland again?

The Rangers player has been spouting off in the press as if he’s some sort of God-like footballer as opposed to the average no-mark that he really is, even at lowly SPL level.

‘I think as we speak just now, the whole nation hate me’, said the former Motherwell and Wigan ‘trier’, who is apparently interested in a future career as a stand-up comedian.

Hmm…well, to be honest, if McCulloch had at any point been one of Scotland’s best players and had decided to make himself unavailable for selection at a crucial time in a World Cup qualifying campaign, that might be something approaching true. But in reality, if you gave someone a spare 50p to go and phone someone who gave a ****, they’d probably be struggling to find such a beast!

I don’t know what it is about certain football players. I suppose it’s very easy for young men to become completely self-obsessed to the point of this level of arrogance by having lots of money thrown at them at such a young age for very little in return, but even by your average footballer’s standards, McCulloch’s comments really are taking the biscuit. He’d have been better advised just to keep quiet about the whole thing and remain dignified until after his career had finished. Then if he wanted to dish the dirt or whatever once the dust had settled, he could do so via the Daily Ranger or some other comic in a few years’ time possibly when he could do with the dosh.

If anyone genuinely does care that this guy will never again grace the famous dark blue jersey then feel free to disagree with me here, but I can’t see why anyone would. After all, why would they when we have…..er…..Kirk Broadfoot…….?!

Just to emphasise the point of your article Mr H, let me be the first to ask – why has Lee McCalloff decided to withdraw his services ? (I could use this new-fangled interweb thingy to find out, but basically can’t be *rsed trying to find out).

Lee McCulloch announcing his retirement is about as worthwhile as me announcing I am not available for selection for the Brazil national team!

  • HUGGYLOCH says:

Don’t know why he has done this, as he has more chance of a game in the Scotland team than at Rangers. I thought the papers hinted at a ‘story’ regarding family to unfold later …. but whatever it is , there is no justification …. i don’t understand why the club doesn’t have the full say over whether he plays or not.

To sum it up – no great loss and he has made a dick of himself in the process.

Thinking about it, can players actually retire from international football? I’m sure the letter of the rulebook is that if McCulloch were to be called up and refuse, he could have his registration scrubbed.

  • MrH says:

I’m not sure FH – there have certainly been many players before who have publicly announced their international retirement, but in the main these tend to be established players at that level, not guys who have barely been good enough for their countries like McCulloch. Like I said, he should just have kept quiet about it – instead he’s just made himself look like an arrogant t**t.

Participating in international competition is entirely voluntary, but most players want to do it because of the money / honour / prestige etc. I think the rules apply to clubs more than players – if a player is called up for a competitive international, their club *has* to release them & can’t refuse on the grounds that they might get injured or whatever. On the subject of McCulloch – my first thought when I heard the news was “Lee who!?”… which kinda tells its own story I suppose.

Lee former Motherwell wonderkid who ended up in mediocrity who? Granted when various players like McAllister, Collins and Hendry have packed up and left the national game I have taken notice. But just how many caps did Lee win? Good article sir I suspect you will be getting some comments about this using the term “use” wrongly over the next while.

  • Dalien says:

According to Scocer Db he has 15 caps… Are they mostly sub appearances I wonder…?

I can never follow this international retirement thing especially as sometimes the justification is to prolong the club career. Is a clube career really extended by not playing the odd international? – I’m not convinced. Surely there’s a real pride in playing for your country and I can’t imagine, for example, Christian Dailly “retiring”. He may not get picked but I bet he always wants to and makes himself available. I’m always a bit dubious when this sort of thing is trumpeted in the papers – surely the dignified way to do it is to meet the manager face to face and have a chat about it in private. Lee McCulloch, great goal v Unkraine and that’s possibly about it.

  • MrH says:

    That IS about it.
