McGhee Linked With Hearts

A report this morning has been linking Motherwell manager Mark McGhee with a potential summer move to Tynecastle.

Quite where this story originates from is anyone’s guess, as the Hearts board tend to be more secretive these days than the Masons, but I think most supporters would be quite content if it was true.

McGhee is a guy who had disappeared off the football radar for quite a few years after a promising start to his managerial career in England, but he has earned many plaudits for his contribution at Motherwell so far this season.

A very articulate man who handles the media as well as anyone I’ve seen in this country lately, McGhee also appears to be a good tactician if the performances of his team against Hearts so far this season are anything to go by.

He clearly likes his sides to be physical in their approach and as this is something that Hearts really struggle to excel at these days, I think McGhee would potentially be a very welcome acquisition.

However I can’t imagine that there won’t be other clubs out there who will be interested in McGhee’s services, and given the circus of a board that Hearts have, you’d have to think that we could be well down the pecking order if that was the case.

Still, it’s one to keep an eye on…

From where we are now, this rumour looks extremely tantalising. As Scottish managers go, McGhee would be ideal – experience of both England and Scotland. However we’ve seen too many tantalising rumours over the last year (Naismith, Robson, Keegan etc) for most of us to get excited. And lets face it, anybody could put 2 and 2 together and come up with this – he didn’t get the Scotland job, he said he would stay with Motherwell till the summer, he’s ambitious, etc. Oh well – at least each passing day without a manager brings us closer to the day that we eventually appoint one.

Thought this might be the usual rumour rubbish, but McGhee’s denial in the press this morning has some interesting wording. “It’s not as if I actively put my name forward for this level of speculation. I didn’t wake up one morning and decide I wanted to be considered for the Scotland job. What happened was Alex McLeish, the outgoing manager, put my name forward and Gordon Strachan, a good friend, supported my candidacy. Then the story grew its own momentum.”. Indeed Mark, but you were still interviewed for the Scotland job and were within a whisker of getting it. So it was more than just a story. Will watch this one with interest… at least until we appoint Manageras Nomarkis that is!
