Hearts captain Michael Stewart will be heavily featured in a half-hour broadcast on Radio Scotland on Monday 28th September at 11.30 am, explaining the various scenarios faced by professional players when they have to give up the game. The idea for this program came from the current backdrop of clubs trimming their squads for financial reasons, and our captain seems to have been approached by the BBC to tell the stories from the inside.

Although many of us have reservations about Stewart`s abilities as a player and captain, there`s little doubt that he comes across as a fairly well-spoken and articulate guy whenever he is interviewed – definitely a class above the usual “ra boys done good” comments. I`m looking forward to hearing him describe the reality of how players cope with retirement, serious injury, or early rejection by clubs.

Hopefully the program will be available on the BBC i-player for those of us not able to listen to the original broadcast.

Talking of the media, I couldn`t believe my ears last Sunday while listening to the Radio Scotland build-up from Parkhead. Cult broadcaster Chic Young (hang on? cult may not be quite right) was dispatched to do a pre-match interview with Hearts manager Csaba Laszlo, and proceeded to quiz him on the possibility of Ismael Bouzid playing as a lone striker. Csaba gave his usual polite and meandering explanation, which seemed to confuse Chic (which is quite easy to do). After Csaba departed for the dressing room, Chic tried to hide his confusion by announcing – “You know, Csaba often appears foolish in his interviews, but I have a wee feeling that he`s actually quite a smart cookie.”

Quite an amazing comment, which revealed clearly who the fool is. Still, maybe one day he`ll manage to speak English as well as our manager does – but I doubt it.

Finally, today saw THE football quote to cap all football quotes. Rangers forward Kenny Miller came out with his gem following the spate of cards shown to his team-mates and manager – “There has got to be something done. I feel referees are having way too much say in results of games.”

Dearie me? you really couldn’t make this stuff up, could you ?
