£8million For Alan Hutton?!

I hear that Rangers’ Alan Hutton knocked back a move to Spurs tonight after the London club were reportedly prepared to offer something in the region of £8million for the full-back.

£8million! Football really has gone mad in the money stakes hasn’t it?

If we thought that £9million for Craig Gordon was a good sum of money, then this sort of cash for Hutton would have been a truly unbelievable piece of business by Rangers. It all comes down to supply and demand of course, but I really can’t see how this player can be rated as highly as this. I know that he is a vastly improved full-back from the one he was a few years ago, but then so is Robbie Neilson….anyone fancy offering us £8million for Robbie?! No? Ok we’ll take £5million then….we’re not fussy!

It just goes to show you what can happen when you put in a performance of real note in a big match. Hutton played like a man possessed for Scotland against Italy at Hampden and was desperately unlucky to be on the losing side that day. He certainly played at a higher level that day than I’d ever seen him before, but one performance does not make you an £8million player overnight, and let’s not forget that it was his poor touch that ultimately cost Scotland the match that night, albeit with some very questionable refereeing assistance. It’s this sort of thing that is likely to keep Hutton at a level considerably below genuine quality – any time I’ve seen him live for Rangers he has been poor, with his only redeeming attributes being physical i.e. pace, strength and endeavour. Very much like Neilson in fact, but with a bit more pace!

This seems to be the way that football is going though. We’ve seen some absolutely ludicrous transfer fees this season down south, but it’s gradually spreading north with the likes of Gordon and Scott Brown going for much more than many people predicted. At least it shows that more people are now recognising Scottish talent, and that’s got to be a positive for the game up here.

Spurs supporter here, i’ve seen him play a few times for Rangers and for Scotland and have to say, I was also very unimpressed with him. I think we’ve already got 2 full-backs better than him in Chimbonda and Gunter but if he’s as good as people think then, potentially, could be a good signing, Especially if Fergies lining him up as a long term replacement for Gary Neville! He shouldn’t ponder too long on the offer though, Ferguson won’t just jump because “Spurs have made an offer”, he’s a world class manager, he won’t be pushed into panic-buying!

You’re analysis sounds about the same as mine mate – he’s a very average football player and not the sort of guy to take Spurs to another level.

The difference is that Craig Gordon was actually worth 9million. He is a world class keeper, well European Class at least. Alan Hutton a couple of season ago was accused of being one of the worst Rangers players ever.

bearin in mind these are premiership prices, petrov, boumsong, gordon!!! need i say more. btw nielson is rubbish, he was ok a couple of seasons ago but just now hes terrible

Anything that forces the hand of Rangers and Celtic to pay a fair, appropriate (and even a ridiculously inflated) price for a player from another Scottish club is good news. Might put an end to derisory, unrealistic offers and a mentality that says 1) unsettle the player 2) get him of the cheap 3) play him in the reserves. And then they complain about the quality of opposition in the SPL and that this hinders their progress in Europe!!

imcd you couldn’t have put it better! Btw Billy, Neilson’s always been poor mate – we all know that TOO well!
