Hearts In Shrewd Move Shocker!

What’s this I hear you cry – the Hearts board have actually made a shrewd call on something to do with the team? Well, it would certainly appear so as far as the situation with Jose Goncalves is concerned.

Earlier in the week it was announced that the Portuguese defender had agreed to go out on a year’s loan to German club Nuremburg with a view to making the move permanent. However what we didn’t know at the time of this announcement, was that Hearts had also been agreeing a new two-year contract with Jose, which effectively ensures that should he decide that his future is indeed in Germany after the coming season, Hearts will have to receive a decent sum of money for his services.

It would appear as though Jose’s previous contract was actually coming to an end, so he would have been able to move wherever he wanted without any income coming Hearts’ way. I’m not entirely sure how the club have gone about engineering this deal, but purely from a selfish point of view with regards to Hearts’ finances, this is surely a pretty sound piece of business? Let’s face it, the player has been considerably less than what you would call a big success here, and most of us would have been quite content if he’d left without a transfer fee coming our way. So the fact that the club have been able to ensure that they’ll get just that should Jose decide to move anywhere within the next two years should be recognised.

We’ve been very quick to criticise those running (or should that be ruining?) our club lately – and rightly so. However credit where credit’s due here.

Now then….back to this manager business…
