Hearts Turn Down Wolves Bid For Berra

Hearts have reportedly turned down a bid in the region of £1.5million from Wolves for captain Christophe Berra.

Berra has been linked with a move to Molineux for quite a few months now so it comes as no surprise to hear of this offer, but it’s being suggested that Hearts will not be interested in selling the player unless an offer upwards of £2million is on the table.

I suppose this is fair enough given Berra’s age and the fact that he’s now on the fringes of the international scene, but to be honest I’d still consider £1.5million as decent money for this player. He has yet to display anything that suggests to me that he has the quality of a future international player, and is someone I feel has only kept his place in the team because of the captaincy, which should never have been given to someone so inexperienced in the first place.

However it is definitely true to say that a combination of being given this responsibility too early in his career, coupled with the general mismanagement of Hearts, has definitely not helped Berra to develop in the way that he possibly could have by now. Maybe if Hearts get a new manager soon and he comes in and decides to relieve Berra of his duties in favour of a more experienced leader of men, we may yet see him showing signs of becoming the player that so many believe he actually is. I hope so for his sake, as it would be a shame for a promising career to have been completely ruined by the incompetence of Mr Romanov’s collection of puppets.

In the meantime though, if someone does come in with a £2million+ offer for Berra, I think the club would be ill-advised to turn it down.

I think we should be biting their hands off for the money.

Agreed. I do honestly believe that Berra has to leave the club this summer if we’re going to get a new manager. He is not captain material (at the moment anyway)… any proper manager is going to be able to spot that in about five minutes, and to take the captaincy away from him would both demoralise him & split the dressing room. Better for him to leave on a high IMO.

    …on a high?!

Well, for him at any rate… I meant leave without suffering the indignity of having the captaincy taken away from him.

Yeah I see what you’re saying….about as high as he’s probably gonna get !
