Jambos – Gluttons For Punishment!

The news that Saturday’s home match against Dundee United is heading for a sell-out surely has most of us scratching our heads in disbelief.

I suppose when we consider that out of the stadium’s capacity of around 17,500, there are only a small number of tickets that can go on sale for each league match given that there are more than 13,000 season ticket holders. But even still, have those 3,000 or so other fans SEEN how the team has been performing lately?!

I certainly don’t want to criticise anyone for going along and continuing to support their team. That is after all, one of the things that you’d be looking for your ‘supporters’ to do, but I do sometimes wonder what sort of message this sends out to the likes of Romanov and his board. Does it not give them even more encouragement to continue doing whatever they like to our club in the knowledge that these stupid lemmings will continue to ‘bend over and take it’ (as one of our more wiser posters likes to put it!)?

It’s a difficult one, as will be the decision on whether or not to purchase a season ticket in the summer for many of us. The likelihood is that most fans will be holding out until the last possible minute to see what happens with the managerial situation before agreeing to come back, but there will also be the normal ‘hardcore’ group who will be coming back no matter what.

I really hope that the uncharacteristic loyalty being shown towards the side this season (not including the barracking that comes from the home support on a weekly basis mind you!) bears some fruit in the summer. I have to say that I’m less than optimistic about that, and would be very surprised if we do indeed get the sort of manager that we’d all like, but this is something that we’ll just have to wait on for now.

In the meantime it looks as though there’s another Tynecastle sell-out on the horizon this weekend……will YOU be going?!

Yes. Thing is, for me anyway, these sort of things are booked weeks (sometimes months) in advance, because we have to organise the tickets, the coach, etc. I have to say I’m not greatly looking forward to getting up at 6am to drive to Preston to catch a bus to take me to Tynecastle where I’ll no doubt witness another Levein-inspired drubbing, but being a Jambo isn’t a choice. It’s a lifestyle.

  • MrH says:

…and it gives you an excuse to moan about something!

  • Specs Haver says:

Yes I’ll be there too. Have to hand it to you, StockportJambo, for your admirable dedication to the cause. If recent results against Utd are anything to go by, anything better than a 4 goal defeat will be worth celebrating. I think the activity (or lack of it) between May and July is what many will watch, before deciding whether to renew. I’m definitely NOT renewing before 5th May, unless someone decent gets appointed before then – but can’t see it, really.

  • MrH says:

What date does the season finish? The alleged new manager is currently in a job…….

  • StockportJambo says:

Didn’t the season finish in January? I’m with you on the renewing front SH, although it matters little to me since I don’t have a season ticket to renew. But if I did… and I can’t see why anyone would want to renew for another season of *that*, and so far we have no firm reason to believe it will be any different next season. PAY AT THE GATE!!!!!!

  • e-jambo says:

I’ll be there, cheering the lads on as best I can, Regardless of who plays up front and how many long balls we punt up the park.

As I said on some other thread, I have already renewed (on the first day too)! I do find it difficult to logically articulate why but I know full well that regardless of what happens, or doesn’t, between now and next season – the bottom line is that I absolutely “enjoy” (??!!) going to Tynecastle every other week. I enjoy the highs we have but in a strangely perverse way this is sort of the same for the lows. Both are a significant talking point with mates on match day and also with other pals who support different teams. There’s a sense of belonging and camraderie that I feel as a Hearts fan and attending all home matches – and the odd away game when I can – is a hugely important part of that. Do I feel let down by the club and angry at the way things are going at the moment? Absolutely – but for me there’s always that strange glimmer of hope along with the heartfelt conviction that if only we could get our act together we could be genuine contenders! Hearts are an important part of my life and I’m just not prepared to giva that up. Right – I’m off to lie down in a darkened room for the day!

  • StockportJambo says:

itsnomarooned, I can completely understand that point of view believe me, and I commend you on your conviction. However, MrH’s original point was (I think) that a sell-out at Tynecastle means a sizeable number of pay-at-the-gate customers (like me) also attending. For the past couple of years, I can’t say I’ve felt the camaraderie nor the sense of belonging that you mention – in fact, I’ve felt like the club was dying right in front of me… with people around me wondering why the hell they were there either. My lowest point was the Rangers game which marked Malofeev’s last game in charge – I swore I’d never go back. But I did of course, and here I go again. Paying at the gate is one thing. Giving your money to Romanov for an entire season is another, and sends entirely the wrong message IMO. That glimmer of hope grows ever dimmer if people continue to line Romanov’s pockets while the status quo remains. If ever there was a time to take a stand and send a message, this would be it. Unfortunately, there are too many people out there who are unwilling to make that short-term sacrifice for the long-term good of the club.

  • MrH says:

Agreed, but like we’ve said for some time now, there aren’t enough people who are convinced that this sort of action IS for the good of the club. Until there are, not a lot will be done.

  • Specs Haver says:

I sense the tide is turning a bit in that respect, Mr H. Unless something positive is announced, I’d be surprised if ST’s reach 10,000 for next season. Of course, maybe Romanov thinks 10,000 blindly renewing still represents a vote of confidence in his management. Maybe it hardly matters, since Hearts trading at a loss represents good business for Ukio – if money is all he cares about.

  • StockportJambo says:

It’s a heart (sic) wrenching thing, because just about every other Jambo I’ve mentioned this to also agrees with me – yet they’ll still buy the season tickets, or otherwise go to as many games as they can. As will I. It’s hard to reconcile NOT giving money to the club as being somehow helpful – especially during difficult times like these. It’s natural to want to support our team (quietly neglecting the fact that “club” and “team” have been at loggerheads for some time now). And of course there’s always that nagging concern in the back of people’s minds of what Romanov might do if he got it into his head that people really don’t like him, and he took the huff as a result…

  • imcd says:

Trouble is we?re angry, confused, let down and we don?t know what to do about it or who to ?do it at?. Being devoted to Heart of Midlothian Football Club and supporting them through good times and bad is a worthy, loyal thing to do. But this jars with the lies, false promises and rather dubious nature of Romanov and his cohorts. The fans are torn and simply don?t know what to do for the best. Anyone who has logged into JKB lately will have seen examples of this on a daily basis. More often than not they are fighting (verbally) amongst themselves ? the believers, the cynics and everyone else in between.

  • MrH says:

Yes, although to be honest JKB has been like that for a very long time! I don’t know what the answer is to all of this……..does anyone know if the A Team are still up for hire?!

  • itsnomarooned says:

I pity the fool …… sucker!

  • MrH says:

it would be nice to think that this particular ‘plan’ would come together…..preferably quickly!

  • itsnomarooned says:

I suspect that even the A-Team would be hard pushed to construct a football team out of the old junk they might find lying around Tynecastle. Personally I think we should go for Michael Knight and Stringfellow Hawk!

  • jonnyjambo16 says:

Good idea by Vlad to bring in fans with family day but won’t mkae a difference as we’re still gonna lose.

  • MrH says:

Stringfellow Hawk, now there was a name!
