Maybury Linked With Hearts – Again

Former Hearts defender Alan Maybury has today been linked with a potential move back to Tynecastle.

The Irish right back, who was one of Craig Levein’s first signings during his stint as Hearts manager back in the early 2000s, has just been freed by Aberdeen after a short spell there. For me he was one of the best right backs the club have had since ’80s – he was strong in the tackle, had plenty of heart, a bit of pace and linked well with the forward. His only problem was his questionable temperament.

However would I take him back now? Hmm…if you’d offered me him six months ago I’d probably have said ‘yes’, but perhaps his best days are now behind him, especially if Aberdeen didn’t deem him worth of another contract!

I’d take the point that he’s probably much better in his position than anyone else currently at Hearts, but I’d suggest that the club really should be looking to sign a top quality player for this position….not that I expect that to happen of course! I’m not sure that the likes of Maybury would be the answer now.

We’ll see what happens here, but I have a feeling that it’s probably just idle speculation – it’s highly unlikely that Laszlo has even heard of Alan Maybury, and even less that Vladimir Romanov would want to sign him!
