McCann has agreed a two-and-a-half year deal with the club he left in 1998 for Rangers. Despite apparent interest from Wigan and Blackburn, the 31 year-old’s preference was always a return to Edinburgh once he knew Hearts were interested.

McCann: “I won’t say I wasn’t tempted to give it one more try in the top division in England, but the attraction of Tynecastle and the relationship I felt with the club was too big a factor to turn down.”

Beslija looked set to sign today also after he passed a medical and agreed personal terms, but the deal is apparently hanging in the balance now with the problem appearing to be the transfer fee, believed to be in the region of £800,000.

McCann is a positive signing for Hearts. I can’t see him being in the first eleven every week but he should be an excellent man to have in the squad. It will certainly give Rudi Skacel some direct competition for the left wing position, so for those who’ve been doubting Rudi’s workrate recently this is surely a good move.

Hearts fans who saw McCann as a traitor for going to Rangers should remember that he signed a new contract in the close-season prior to this, thus ensuring Hearts received a substantial fee for him. This was something that Paul Ritchie and David Weir could have done but didn’t and I always respected McCann for that. Let’s welcome him back.
