Aston Villa featured Acorns, a local hospice, on their shirts for the 2008/09 season but Hearts will become the first British club to be sponsored by a charity from next season with a three-year deal with Save the Children agreed.

The Official Website announced this deal, which moves into place for the start of our return to the Premiership, last week with this possible due to a ‘group of philanthropists’, who wished to remain anonymous, funding the deal according to owner Ann Budge.

Budge said that this financial support for us as a clubs and for someone else to benefit had seen an agreement that a seven-figure amount would be divided equally between the club and the national charity with such an agreement removing the need for us to have a ‘commercial shirt sponsor.’

‘(The group) indicated that they wanted to offer financial support to the club – and when they asked if there was a specific area in which they could help, the idea was born.

‘These business people believe that we are promoting true family values and they want to help.

‘It also demonstrates that – with a bit of lateral thinking – things can be done differently in football. We don’t have to be constrained by the statement that we hear all too often: ‘This is how things are done in football.’

As said Aston Villa featured the charity Acorns for a season but we’ll be the first British clubs to have this on a permanent basis.

Barcelona have, of course, featured Unicef on their shirts in recent times with that arrangement apparently coming to an end next year.
