You’ll Never Walk Alone

So what is the story with this song then? When I ask that, I mean which club does the song truly belong to? Liverpool or Celtic? Or someone else entirely perhaps?

There’s no doubt that ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ can be a fantastic anthem. Even as a Hearts supporter being forced to sit in that horrible little corner they allocate to us at Celtic Park, it’s fair to say that the goose-pimples are out in force, especially when they turn the music off the tannoy and just let the fans carry it on. It’s one of those moments that makes you realise just how much that football can be a genuinely emotional and uplifting occasion – I’m sure that even the most ardent anti-Celtic person would have to admit that.

But is it their song? Well, I’m not really qualified to say whether it should be or not as I’ve never really studied the history behind it, but from the high level knowledge that I do have of the song, I wouldn’t have thought so. Correct me if I’m wrong (and I may well be!), but was it not penned by Gerry And The Pacemakers, a band from Liverpool, who were all Liverpool supporters? So, by that reckoning, it would make logical sense for the Liverpool support to have adopted it as one of their anthems, a bit like Hibs have done with Sunshine On Leith.

I have been to both Anfield and Parkhead and experienced being in the middle of the pre-match (and in Liverpool’s case, during the match and after it as well!) rendition of the song and at both venues, it’s fantastic. But I would have to honestly say that the Liverpool people gave me the impression that it genuinely meant much more to them, very akin to a Hearts fan’s attitude to ‘The Hearts Song’. It’s like there is no debate about who it belongs to – it’s ‘their’ song. With Celtic it still seems passionate, but just a bit……….different…….it’s quite hard to fully explain unless you’ve been there.

So does anyone have the definitive answer to this? Does one even exist?! What do Liverpool fans think of Celtic adopting the same anthem…….and vice versa?

we dont mind celtic using OUR song as liverpool and celtic are britains 2 greatest clubs

  • Eusebio says:

Sure Feyenoord sing it also, and Gerry Marsden who is from Liverpool stated before the CL Final 2005 that he was delighted he let Liverpool Football Club have his song as he is a Scouser and we broadened the song throughout the world even more, so I gathered from that statement, its our song, and more logical that its our song as it is on our crest also

  • MrH says:

Yeah I’m pretty sure that there are a couple of clubs in Europe who sing it also, so Feyenoord’s a good shout. But it really does come down to Liverpool and Celtic doesn’t it? Or….well…….Liverpool!

The song is from the stage musical called ?Carousel? from the late 1950?s. Gerry and the Pacemakers recorded it in 1963 and at that time the Kop was kicking off as was pop music from groups who were from Liverpool and the Kop adopted that song in 1964. Then Celtic stole it in the 1970?s.

Stonesy your resourcefulness knows no bounds!

  • stonesy says:

For information, they also stole Hail Hail from Linfield….who sang it in the early 50s. Let’s not seem too anti Celtic though…after all, they did win the league….”know wat a mean”

  • TicV"Establishment" says:

When are the polis coming to arrest us for nicking all these ditties then Stonesy?…btw, the Linfield connection is well wide of the mark, although another club did at one time claim that we nicked it off them as well…if you know the history like.
I don’t think there’s a numpty in the world who would claim YNWA was not the anthem of Liverpool, which we later adopted..very successfully as their is a great affinity between the clubs. The world now knows it as much for the Mighty Pool as it does for the TIC, the fact the dukla pumpherston might sing it is a bit of an irrelevance tbh. Nobody does it better than the Pool and the TIC, not even carly simon in that bond film…lol

  • MrH says:

Wouldn’t be like anyone from Glasgow to nick anything now would it?! Or Liverpool for that matter………. PS That particular Bond film was one of the very best I believe……….

  • TicV"Establishment" says:

That’s a terrible slur on two great cities Mr.H…, your turning into a right Boris Johnson…LMAO, only kiddin, anyway, its You’ll Never Walk Alone, NOT You’ll Never STEAL Alone..LOL. ok, being serious, I agree, that Bond film was one of the best. still, you better hope the Pool fans don’t read this though, and Boris might sue you for nicking his best lines..LMAO

  • MrH says:

I’ve no idea what you’re trying to suggest…..I merely said that I’d be surprised if people from either location would stoop to such petty actions……….(!)

  • TicV"Establishment" says:

LMAO, I’d be surprised as well M8, and I don’t think anyone would get too upset now would they?…I certainly didn’t…or I’d have said so, rather than take it in good humour and respond in kind..
