The media are reporting that our owner arrived in Edinburgh yesterday, and at some stage met with the first-team squad. During this meeting, he apparently asked the players why their results are not up to the standard of last season – and allegedly told them that a new Sporting Director was being appointed !!

Maybe Vladimir should meet the players more often, since they followed up with a decent performance against Celtic – and more importantly, managed to win.

The BBC reported tonight that the mystery man has previous coaching experience in Latvia and Lithuania – hardly a surprising revelation, when you think about it.

As yet, no name has been made public, and the official Hearts website has made no mention of the appointment. But if this news is true, then it is bound to fuel speculation about how Csaba Laszlo will react to having an on-site football director to answer to. Many fans will probably think – “Oh no, here we go again ?. another Malofeev or Cervenkov to throw a spanner in the works” If the individual is going to impose unreasonable control over how Csaba picks the team, then clearly that will lead to enormous friction which would probably see our manager call it a day at Tynecastle.

Trying to look for positives though, it is just possible that with his own man installed as Sporting Director, Romanov might be more willing to sanction a decent signing or two in January – let’s hope that the targets are actually ones recommended by Csaba Laszlo !!

Stop Press – the mystery guy is apparently called Ivan Svabovic, former Sport Director at Zalgiris Vilnius and coach of Lithuania U-19s. Ho-hum….
